With the tremendous advancements in technology
throughout our industry over the past
decade, keeping abreast of changes can
often become quite burdensome. There is an
update all dealers should be aware of
regarding the existing AMPS cellular network.
The numerous dealers that utilize this network
for technologies such as AlarmNet - C,
Skyroute, Uplink and the like, should note the
FCC has established Feb. 18, 2008 as the
date after which the cell phone carriers in
the United States may opt not to continue
support. The term for this date is referred to
as the Sunset Clause for this technology.
With an emphasis being placed on the new
digital networks for signal transmission,
both CDMA and GSM, manufacturers have
begun their development efforts. Although
the date has been set where carriers may opt
not to continue support of the AMPS network,
this does not mandate that they must do so.
Although the year 2008 seems a distant
thought, it is in the best interests of your
company to contact the cellular manufacturer
that you work with for further information
regarding the 'sunsetting' of the AMPS network.
