Since 1920, life expectancy of the United States population has increased dramatically, with men living an average seven years longer and women approximately 13 years longer. With this astonishing extension of people's lives, services that once seemed inconsequential are now a necessary staple of our society. One of those services is Personal Emergency Response System (P.E.R.S.) monitoring. From a brief examination of the censuses from the 1990 to 2000 - only a 10-year period - the 65-year-old and over population has increased by 3,746,922. The boom in this demographic has lead to exponential growth in P.E.R.S. Monitoring. Once believed to be taboo by most of the senior marketplace, it is now an explosive industry with tremendous growth potential. Gone are the days of clumsy equipment that burdened the user, replaced by sleeker designs and more sophisticated technology. Given the choice, most seniors and persons with medical conditions or physical challenges would prefer to live independently in their own homes and be as independent as possible. This scenario is made possible by P.E.R.S. devices and monitoring. There are some startling industry numbers to be examined that relate to the need for these devices for the senior marketplace and those with unique needs:
With only 11 percent of people found by their family members in an emergency situation, the need for a P.E.R.S. system becomes all the more glaring. Through a number of clinical studies on the subject of the benefits of P.ER.S., a number of interesting points were discovered. Those with some type of personal alert system for a two-year period had 25 percent less hospital admissions, 59 percent reduction in average hospital stay and a 23 percent increase in the number of people that required NO HOSPITAL ADMISSIONS. There is no getting around the fact that these devices save lives and in many cases alleviate the need for seniors or physically challenged individuals to spend extended time in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers or assisted living facilities. As the population becomes increasingly more sophisticated and the desire to remain independent continues to grow, the P.E.R.S. marketplace is further poised to experience unlimited growth. Now is the time to take advantage of the recurring revenue stream that this virtually untapped marketplace has to offer.
